Transport Ministry finds alternative to metro line between Bucharest train station and airport

The Romanian Ministry of Transport is trying to find other ways of connecting Bucharest’s main train station Gara de Nord to the Otopeni Airport, given that the metro line will only be ready in 2021, one year after Euro 2020.

Romania’s capital will host four football matches of the UEFA European Championship (Euro 2020). Thus, as the metro line will not be ready in time, the local authorities are now considering an alternative: a light-rail train that would facilitate the connection between the train station and the airport.

“I have good news that I will announce right now, but confirm in two weeks. We are talking about a rail connection between Bucharest and Otopeni Airport. I would call it a light-rail train,” said transport minister Sorin Buse, cited by local Agerpres.

“It is a very creative and very modern solution that already exists in a folder at the Ministry. It is an extraordinary project that has been presented internationally (I think that it was also awarded), which can be done easily in a short period of time.”

According to the project, the light-rail train could be connected to the existing network of train stations.

Moreover, the Transport Ministry also plans to connect some of the subway terminals to train tracks for the commuters.

A similar project was announced earlier this year by the former transport minister. The train connection to the airport would probably go through Mogosoaia.

Bucharest’s General Council approved in September the Area Town Planning that sets the final route for the M6 metro line that will connect Gara de Nord to Henri Coanda International Airport (Otopeni Airport).
