Traditional lovers’ day in Romania, celebrated at Bucharest museum next week

18 February 2017

The Village Museum in Bucharest will celebrate Dragobete, the traditional lovers’ day in Romania, with several events next week.

The program comprises activities for the entire family, such as shadow theater for children, Dragobete traditions, traditional music, a poetry contest, and traditional dance. The visitors will also find the most beautiful creations of local artisans, special martisoare (small objects men offer to women on March 1), and products from the traditional cuisine.

Moreover, the visitors named Draga, Draguta, Dragos, Dragan, or those who celebrate their birthdays, will have the chance to visit the museum for free.

The events will take place at the Village Museum in Bucharest, from February 24 until February 26.

Dragobete is Romania’s special day dedicate to love. It is celebrated every year on February 24, ten days after Valentine’s Day.

The story goes that Dragobete was the son of the old lady called Baba Dochia, who marks the return of spring. The traditions vary from region to region. There are a number of customs in rural areas, many of which are not kept up by modern Romanians. Read more about it here.
