Three-year prison sentence for former Bucharest Police deputy

18 October 2016

Bucharest Court of Appeal sentenced Roberto Ababei, the former deputy general manager of the Bucharest Police Department, to three years in prison, no parole, for influence peddling.

Initially, Ababei received a sentence of three years of probation from the Bucharest Court, but the National Anticorruption Department (DNA) challenged the decision, reports local Agerpres.

Between July 14 and August 6, 2015, Roberto Ababei received a total of EUR 13,000 and food products from two company managers, according to DNA. In return, the Police chief promised them that he would use his influence on the police officers from the Economic Crime Investigation Service who were investigating alleged tax evasion offenses committed by the two businessmen.

The two businessmen, namely Eduard Alexandru Zama and Dan Mihai Pencea, were also sentenced to two years probation.

Bucharest Court of Appeal also ordered the confiscation of RON 24,800, EUR 3,795 and GBP 320 from Roberto Ababei. The Court’s decision is final.

DNA prosecutors arrested Ababei one year ago.
