Some 70 tourists stuck up the mountain near Romania’s Hotel of Ice as cable car breaks down

19 January 2016

The cable car that goes up at Balea Lake (Balea Lac), in Romania’s Fagaras Mountains broke down on Tuesday leaving 70 tourists stuck up the mountain at more than 2,000 meters for the night. The Hotel of Ice is the main tourist attraction near Balea Lake.

However, none of the tourists had medical problems and the cabins near Balea Lake took them in for the night. Most of the tourists are Romanian high school students from Craiova, but there are also some Portuguese students, according to Digi 24 news station.

The cable car is now the only means of transport to get to the Balea Lake as Romania’s famous high altitude road Transfagarasan, which crosses the mountain near the lake, is closed due to the snow.

The cable car should be fixed by tomorrow and allow all the tourists to go down, according to the installation’s operator.

Romania’s famous Hotel of Ice is also located at Balea Lac. Some 31 English tourists checked into the hotel’s ice rooms and igloos on Monday, according to Agerpres.

The weather is extremely cold all over Romania and during the night temperatures are expected to drop to minus 20 degrees Celsius at Balea Lake.
