Smuggling, drug trafficking, and prostitution contribute to Romania's GDP

The smuggling of cigarettes and alcohol, drug trafficking, and prostitution had a share of 0.21% in Romania’s GDP last year. They amounted to some EUR 340 million, according to preliminary data by the National Statistics Institute (INS).

The share of illegal activities in the economy was similar to the one recorded in 2014.

Romania’s GDP amounted to EUR 160.4 billion last year, according to INS. The smuggling of cigarettes and alcohol contributed 0.1% to the economy, similar to the drug trafficking. Prostitution had a share of 0.01% in the GDP.
