Small and medium-sized companies in Romania seldom take bank loans

18 July 2016

Most small and medium-sized companies (72%) finance their economic activities from their own sources, and only 22% use bank loans, according to the White Paper of SMEs in Romania in 2016.

About 8% of the SMEs used leasing and only 2.1% resorted to non-reimbursable funds as financing source.

The main barriers in accessing bank loans are the credit prices due to high interest rates, the lack of guarantees, and the required paperwork.

SMEs mostly need money for financing their inventory and work capital, developing products and services, and accessing new markets, as well as for investments.
