Senate votes Children’s Day as a legal day off in Romania

14 September 2016

The Romanian Senate voted on Tuesday, September 13, a draft bill that declares June 1 a legal day off in Romania. June 1 is the International Children’s Day.

However, the Chamber of Deputies also needs to approve the bill before it becomes effective.

A group of MPs from all political parties has submitted this draft bill to the Senate earlier this year. In the explanatory memorandum, the MPs said that the parents in Romania need to spend more time with their children.

If the deputies also vote in favor of the bill, June 1 will be a new non-working day in Romania, alongside January 1 and January 2, the first and second day of Orthodox Easter, May 1, the first and second day of the Pentecost, the Assumption of Mary (August 15), Saint Andrew (November 30), Romania’s National Day (December 1), and the first and second day of Christmas.

Unification Day (January 24) was also recently voted as a legal day off in Romania.

Moreover, the Labor Code also provides two days off for each of the three annual religious holidays, declared as such by legal religious denominations, other than Christian, for persons belonging to them.
