Save Romania Union initiates simple motion against Justice Minister

20 January 2017

The Save Romania Union (USR) party will initiate a simple motion against the Justice Minister Florin Iordache, the party announced on Thursday.

USR said it would submit a memorandum to the Justice Ministry, the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM), and the General Prosecutor. Its aim is to prove that the two legislative proposals on pardon and amending the Criminal Code follow the interests of people with former political offices, and not the interest of the society.

Raluca Turcan, the president of the National Liberal Party (PNL), said that her party would support the motion. The People's Movement Party (PMP) also agreed to support it.

However, the three parties have slim chances of having such a motion approved by the Parliament as the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and Liberal Democratic Alliance (ALDE) hold the majority of votes. The two parties also support the Government’s initiative to change the criminal law and pardon some convicts.
