Russia inspects Romanian defense facility as part of trust-building measures

28 March 2017

Russian experts will inspect a military facility in Romania, in accordance with the Vienna Document measures to increase security and trust in the OSCE, said Serghei Rizhkov, the director of the Russian national center for reducing nuclear threat, quoted by the Russian News Agency TAAS.

The inspection takes place on March 28 and lasts one day. The name of the facility to be inspected hasn't been made public.

“Assessments of the kind pursue the goal of verifying information on defense forces and plans for the deployment of the main armaments and technologies,” Rizhkov said.

Romania’s Defense Minister Gabriel Les said such an inspection is a “normal action” which in no way represents a problem from Romania’s point of view, Mediafax reported.

“It is a normal action, in this period. We will see what are the conclusions they will draw. From our point of view it doesn’t represent a problem,” Les said.

The 2011 Vienna Document contains the OSCE’s primary military confidence- and security-building measures, including through military exchanges between member states and the sending of military observers.
