Romania’s tax agency implements the Union Customs Code starting May

19 April 2016

Romania’s tax agency ANAF will implement the Union Customs Code starting May 1.

The code establishes common procedures for European Union (EU) countries, which are aimed at facilitating trading. Thus, the same rules apply no matter in which member state the goods are declared and, once the customs formalities are completed, the goods can be moved freely or can be traded throughout the EU, reads an ANAF statement.

Some of the most important changes promoted by the new Customs Code include the implementation of an electronic system for managing customs decisions - which will manage all information exchange and electronic information processing between customs authorities in different countries, and between economic operators and customs authorities. Moreover, the economic operators will have the opportunity to submit clarifications and additions before any unfavorable decision of the General Customs Directorate is adopted.

“The new Customs Code will facilitate the commercial activity and will ensure the domestic market’s protection. The faster direct cooperation with trading partners will secure the supply chains and will simplify the relation between the business environment and the customs authorities,” said ANAF president Eugen-Dragos Doros.

Moreover, the new Code provides the premises for easier and faster customs control, by 2020, he added.
