Romania's public television gives up telethon for Brancusi campaign

16 September 2016

Romania’s public television will no longer hold a telethon to support the Brancusi e al meu campaign through which the Government aims to raise EUR 6 million to buy the famous Wisdom of the Earth (Cumintenia Pamantului) sculpture.

The Government announced last month that TVR would hold an 8-hour telethon on September 18.

However, TVR announced on September 15 that it would have three live shows dedicated to Brancusi on Sunday, which will cover about 4 hours. These shows will not include personalities answering the phone and taking donations for the campaign.

The Government has raised little over EUR 800,000 in the campaign and still needs to get about EUR 5.2 million in the next two weeks.

The Ministry of Culture has agreed to pay EUR 11 million for the sculpture, with EUR 5 million coming from the state budget.
