Romania's Parliament proposes changes to Big Brother law

Romania's so called 'Big Brother' law might change. A new proposal would make it mandatory for Internet and mobile telephony services suppliers to keep records of phone calls and emails for six months - half the period of time in the original bill rejected by the Constitutional Court.

Another change was that prosecutors would only have access to this data with court approval. The new proposal will be debated in the Chamber of Deputies today (May 22 ). The law was a requirement from the European Commission, and Romania risks paying a fine of over EUR 300,000 per day for not enforcing it on time. The law was rejected by the Constitutional Court, on the grounds that it breached human rights. editor@romania-insider.com
