Romania’s new president Klaus Iohannis to play tennis match against champion Simona Halep

24 November 2014

Romania’s new president Klaus Iohannis will play a demonstration tennis match, next year, against Romanian tennis champion Simona Halep, the current number three in the WTA ranking of the best women tennis players in the world. Iohannis announced the event in a post on his Facebook page.

“I hope that this event will contribute to getting the young generation closer to this wonderful sport,” Iohannis said.

This new announcement comes after Iohannis already accepted a challenge from Simona Halep to go attend the Fed Cup tennis match between Romania and Spain, which will take place on February 7-8 next year, in the Romanian city of Galati, and to sing the national anthem together with Romania’s players.

Klaus Iohannis and Simona Halep have been the most popular Romanians this year. Halep became the most popular Romanian athlete after having won some important tournaments in 2014 and making her way in the elite of world tennis.

Meanwhile, Iohannis became the politician of the moment in Europe, after beating the odds and winning the presidential elections in Romania in a clear manner, in mid-November.

Currently, the two are among the most popular Romanians on Facebook. Iohannis had 1.19 million fans, while Halep had 1.03 million followers, as of November 24, 2014.
