Romania’s largest political party to include people with disabilities on its electoral lists

21 September 2016

Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD) will also have people with disabilities on its lists of candidates for the parliamentary elections, PSD president Liviu Dragnea said on Wednesday.

This way, a category that includes 700,000 people, will also be represented in the Parliament, Dragnea added, according to local News.ro.

PSD’s decision comes after the party leadership and Chamber of Deputies president Florin Iordache reached an agreement on measures aimed at creating facilities for people with disabilities at the Parliament’s Palace. The measures include ramps for wheelchairs, making the plenary hall accessible for people with disabilities, and hiring a sign language interpreter.

In the future, the authorities could also buy two vote consoles, two Braille keypads, and two laptops with special software for people with hearing and sight disabilities.

Romania’s Government adopted on September 14 a national strategy for people with disabilities, for the 2016-2020 period.

Romania will organize parliamentary elections on December 11, with more than 18.9 million people having the right to vote.
