Romania's Horia Colibăşanu plans to climb tallest mountain in the world without extra oxygen

13 December 2013

Romanian mountain climber Horia Colibăşanu, the only Romanian who climbed three of the top five most dangerous peaks in the world, will try to break yet another record for his country.

He will try to climb mount Everest without extra oxygen and without the help of Sherpa mountaineers. It is not the first time when the Romanian chooses to climb without supplementary oxygen.  He has ascended six 8,000-meter mountains on Earth and carried out these expedition style - without supplementary oxygen.

Colibăşanu will be accompanied in his ascent to Everest's 8,850 meters altitude by Slovakian mountain climber Peter Hamor, one of the best mountain climbers in the world. Hamor has already climbed 10 peaks of over 8,000 meters. The audacious attempt will be made between March and May 2014.

The 36-year old Romanian climber is the only local to have climbed the Annapurna, K2 and Dhaulagiri peaks, which are among the most dangerous in the world judging by the mortality rate among climbers. His ascent on K2 in Pakistan, in 2004, is still considered the biggest performance in Romania mountain climbing, and has been unequaled since.

Mount Everest is the Earth's tallest mountain located in the Mahalangur section of the Himalayas, at the border between China and Nepal. The overwhelming majority of the climbers use bottled oxygen to reach the top, but some climbers have managed to summit it without extra oxygen. Most of them also use Nepalese Sherpa mountaineers to carry their supplies up the mountain.
