Romania's Health Insurance House gets EU funds for health card project

14 September 2016

Romania’s National Health Insurance House (CNAS) has managed to get the reimbursement from EU funds for 75% of the expenses it made for the national health card project, one year after the card was been introduced.

The project’s total costs were about RON 90 million (EUR 20.2 million), and CNAS will be able to get back about EUR 15.1 million, reports local Agerpres.

This is the third IT project for which the National Health Insurance House has managed to get European financing, according to the institution. The other two projects, which were reimbursed with EU funds, included the electronic receipt project and the electronic health record.

According to CNAS, some 15.75 million health cards have been issued so far, three-quarters of which have also been activated. The institution will issue another 650,000 cards by the end of this year.

The IT system for the health insurance card has had several failures in the past year, blocking the doctors’ activity. All patients who go to healthcare units, either public or private, and benefit from services that are paid for by the state should use this card.

The IT system for the health card was implemented by HP Romania and Novensys Corporation.
