Romania's Government presents anticorruption strategy for next five years

20 July 2016

Romania’s Government presented yesterday its anticorruption strategy for 2016-2020.

Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos said that laws don’t work if people hold to the idea that “what belongs to the state belongs to everybody”. People should enter a participatory democracy and not a passive one.

“The state can’t do everything that needs to be done in the Romanian society without an individual involvement and each one’s individual responsibility,” Ciolos said.

Romanians need to change their attitude, as beneficiaries of public healthcare and education services, the PM added.

“Removing corruption does not happen only via laws, and not even only through a firm and objective justice.”

The new anti-corruption strategy thus moves the focus on prevention and anti-corruption education.
