Romania's Energy Ministry gives up large hydro power plant project

08 September 2016

Romania’s Energy Ministry wants to give up the large hydro power plant Tarnita-Lapustesti, which is worth EUR 1 billion, and build instead several smaller hydro power plants.

The Tarnita plant should have attracted one of the largest Chinese investments in Romania. However, several energy experts said that the project was inefficient and the investment would never be recovered, reports local Digi24.

The project had to be done in a public-private partnership, and the Chinese group would have financed the project. It would have recovered the money by selling the produced energy.

The smaller hydro power plants will be financed separately, if the project goes on. This means that each of them could have a distinct investor.
