Romania’s Coalition for Family has gathered more than 2.16 million signatures in support of an initiative to amend the Constitution to only allow the marriage between men and women and, implicitly, ban same-sex marriages, according to an announcement posted on Facebook.
It thus more than doubled the number of signatures announced in January. The Coalition is now at the half of the legal six-month period for collecting signatures, reports local Agerpres.
In January, Mihai Gheorghiu, president of the initiative committee, said that the Coalition would gather more signatures that the law required so that this movement would be “a signal, a confession, a warning for all the political and governmental factors” on the importance of this subject.
The Coalition for Family includes 23 NGOs and associations.
Under the law, the Constitution may only be revised if the initiative is supported by at least 500,000 citizens who have the right to vote.
