Romania’s biggest companies: Who made it over the EUR 1 bln mark in 2014?

09 June 2015

Romania’s 20 biggest companies made a cumulated turnover of some EUR 33 billion in 2014 some 3% higher than in 2013. These 20 companies account for roughly 13% of the total revenues of the 600,000 firms that are active in Romania.

The ranking of the biggest nine companies remained unchanged compared to 2013. Car maker Automobile Dacia consolidated its first place, as its business increased by 1.8% last year to EUR 4.23 billion.

Oil and gas producer OMV Petrom remained second and fuel distributor OMV Petrom Marketing was third, despite lower sales. Both companies are part of the OMV Petrom group, the largest in Romania. OMV Petrom Gas also entered the Top 20 last year, for the first time, after a 19% increase in revenues.

Oil refining company Rompetrol Rafinare and fuel distributor Rompetrol Downstream were fourth and fifth. Both increased their sales in 2014. Three other oil companies have been a constant presence in the top 20 in recent years: Petrotel-Lukoil, Lukoil Romania and Mol Romania.

The energy sector dominates the ranking, with 12 companies. Then comes the retail sector, with four companies, the biggest of which is German discounter Kaufland, which had EUR 1.8 billion in sales in 2014.

The ranking also included two car makers, Dacia and Ford (which hasn’t submitted its financial statements to the Finance Ministry yet), a telecom company, Orange Romania, and a tobacco producer and distributor, British American Tobacco.

Some 15 companies posted turnovers of over EUR 1 billion in 2014, up from 13 in 2013. Auchan Romania saw the biggest increase in sales and made it to the top 20 for the first time, after taking over the real hypermarkets.
