Romanians scrap over 164,000 cars under this year’s clunkers program

Over 164,000 cars older than ten years were scrapped until the beginning of September within Romania’s clunkers program, according to the Romanian Environment Ministry. More than 38,000 new cars were sold within the program, out of which 17,215 were made locally. This has triggered the national car park renewal program meeting 87 percent of its objectives by September 3.

This year’s clunkers program, which started on in February, had a budget of EUR 169 million, which could cover 190,000 old cars. As part of the program, owners receive a voucher worth RON 3,800 for each scrapped car, but only up to three vouchers can be used to buy a new car. Vouchers to buy new cars will be valid only until November 23 this year.
