Romanians had gross financial assets of about EUR 100 billion last year. Over a third of this sum is placed in bank deposits, according to data from Romania’s National Bank (BNR).

The remaining financial assets are cash, shares, pension funds, mutual funds, and others, reports local Ziarul Financiar.

Compared to 2009, the Romanians’ savings in bank deposits went up by over 45%, from EUR 21 billion to EUR 31 billion. The deposits grew, although the interest rates decreased.

The loans granted by banks to individuals stayed at about EUR 25 billion. The population thus became a net creditor of the banking system.

The net financial assets rose 2.7 times in the last seven years from EUR 28.1 billion to some EUR 76 billion last year. Net financial assets are calculated as the difference between the financial assets and the population’s debt.

When calculating the population’s wealth, real estate assets are also added to the financial assets. Real estate assets continued to have the biggest share in the structure of net wealth, although the share decreased in the last years.
