Romanians get money from the state to build greener homes

26 July 2016

Romanians who build or insulate their homes using environment friendly materials will get up to RON 40,000 (EUR 9,000) from the state. Those who use renewable energy systems for heating will also have some of their expenses covered by the state through the Green House program.

Romania’s Environment Ministry launched the financing guides for the Green House programs into public debate on Tuesday, July 26. The programs should become operational in August.

The Green House Clasic program helps homeowners replace their traditional heating systems with new ones using renewable energy. The program’s beneficiaries get up to RON 6,000 (EUR 1,350) non-refundable financing from the state if they install solar panels for heating and up to RON 8,000 (EUR 1,800) for heat pump systems.

The program’s budget is EUR 31 million, half of which has been allocated to individuals while the other half is for public institutions.

This year’s novelty is the Green House Plus program, which finances individuals who insulate their homes using ecological materials. The program grants financing of up to RON 35,000 (EUR 7,865) for renovations and RON 40,000 (EUR 9,000) for new buildings. The eligible insulation materials are hemp, wool, cork, cellulose, mineral wool, rock wool, and others.

Public institutions and NGOs will also be able to access this program for financing of up to RON 500,000 (EUR 112,000). The total budget for this program is little over EUR 10 million, EUR 2.7 million of which has been allotted to individuals.
