Four Romanian soldiers were injured in Afghanistan while on a patrol mission in Kandahar province on Sunday morning.

Lieutenant Florin Oprea, sergeant Eduard-Vlad Romilă, corporal Marcel Neagu, and soldier Costică-Victor Tarnovschi, all from the White Sharks Force Protection Battalion, were wounded by the explosion of an improvised explosive device, according to a statement from the Romanian Ministry of National Defense.

Doctors from the military base’s hospital currently supervise them, their health condition being stable.

“Battalion leadership has ensured conditions for soldiers to contact their families by telephone,” reads the statement.

President Klaus Iohannis also reacted to the sad information.

“I learned with regret the news that four Romanian soldiers were wounded today in Afghanistan. For us at home, they are heroes who risk their lives for peace. We must all be grateful. I stand beside them and their families, I wish them good health and a fast recovery!,” the President wrote on his Facebook page.
