Romanian Senate grants special pensions to mayors

22 June 2016

Romania’s Senate adopted yesterday a bill that grants special pensions to local administration officials. The project was adopted with 101 favorable votes, one against, and six abstentions.

The new law is expected to reach President Klaus Iohannis for promulgation.

In January, Romania’s Constitutional Court ruled that the law on pensions for mayors, deputy mayors, chairmen and vice-chairmen of county councils was unconstitutional.

Local representatives who have the legal retirement age are entitled to a special pension at the end of their terms, in addition to the regular pension, according to the law adopted in December last year. The upper chamber passed the law at the end of December by 86 votes to one, whereas the Liberal MPs had left the hall before the vote.
