Romanian Senate approves payroll draft law

24 May 2017

Romania’s Senate approved yesterday the payroll draft law with 85 favorable votes, 10 negative votes and 12 abstentions.

The project will go to the Chamber of Deputies, which is the decision-making forum.

The Senate didn’t approve any of the amendments rejected by the Parliament’s labor committee last week. Senators of the Union to Save Romania (USR) party criticized the draft law and voted against, saying that it will create several inequities among public servants and will even lead to decreases in their income.

Senators in the labor committee adopted the payroll law draft on Thursday last week. The committee’s report includes certain amendments, such as salary increases for mayors and deputy mayors, as well as for employees in environment, integrity and tax agencies and the education sector.

Unions in public administration have threatened to go on strike in front of the Parliament Palace in Bucharest today, when the payroll law draft is to be debated in the Chamber of Deputies’ Labor Committee.

Labor minister Olguta Vasilescu said on Monday that the new payroll law’s impact on the state budget could amount to RON 43 billion (EUR 9.4 billion) until 2022.
