The city hall of Mioveni, Romania, is investing some EUR 217,000 (RON 958,082) in five golden bells and an analogue clock for the Sfinţii Apostoli Petru şi Pavel Cathedral in the city. The bells are provided by the company B&L Construct, and are to be engraved with the mayor’s name, Ion Georgescu, according to the local media.
Mayor Georgescu said the inhabitants of the city suggested purchasing the bells as a community investment. “The bells will remain in the property of the City Hall, but through their administration, the bells will actually stay among the property of Mioveni’s inhabitants because this is an investment of the community, and not an act of charity for the Patriarchate,” said the Mayor. He added that purchasing these bells was also necessary to alert the inhabitants in cases of emergency, such as natural disasters.
The five golden bells to be installed at the Mioveni Cathedral feature engraved decorative designs and weigh between 560 kilograms and three tons. The Cathedral was sanctified on July 1, 2012, after 20 years of construction work.
