Romanian protesters clean up downtown capital after massive rally

04 February 2017

Victoriei Square downtown Romanian capital Bucharest was clean after over 120,000 people protested against the Government on Friday evening for the fourth day in a row.

The previous night, when protests turned violent as a group of soccer supporters joined the peaceful crowds, Victoriei Square was full of plastic bottles and cups at the end of the rally. An old woman came to gather the plastic bottles late at night, and a video of her asking young people to keep fighting for their future became viral on social and local media. A group of protesters returned that night to clean up the square after the violent protests ended.

The next night, when some 120,000-150,000 Romanians gathered in Victoriei Square in front of the Government building to protest against a recent overnight criminal law change via a Government emergency law, more people pitched in to clean up the mess, even if it was well after midnight. Protesters had brought plastic bags to collect the garbage, and the square was clean when the rally ended.

Earlier during the night, over 120,000 protesters sang the Romanian anthem in the square, the highlight of the evening.

București, ora 22:00. Oamenii au cântat imnul împreună.
