Romanian President talks on the phone with British PM, strongly condemns London terror attack

Romania’s President Klaus Iohannis had a phone conversation with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Thursday, the main topic being the Wednesday terror attack in London, and the fight against terrorism.

“The Romanian President condemned in the strongest terms the terrorist attack that took place yesterday in London near Parliament, the symbol of British democracy, and expressed the full solidarity of Romania and the Romanian people with the UK,” reads the statement from the Romanian Presidency related to the phone conversation.

Moreover, Iohannis transmitted his condolences to the victims’ families, and wished a speedy recovery to those who were injured in the attack.

The two officials also discussed about the two Romanians who were injured in the attack. Theresa May expressed her regrets and the hope that their health state, especially of the woman who is in critical condition, will improve.

The Romanian President also reiterated Romania’s support for the fight against terrorism, “evoking the concern for the amplitude and frequency of terrorism, and its degree of unpredictability.”

Romania’s Prime Minister Sorin Grindeanu also referred to the London terror attack on Thursday, saying that he had a talk with the Romanian Ambassador in London who assured him that he is in permanent contact with the two injured Romanians and their families.

He also transmitted his compassion to the victims’ families and those who were injured in the attack.

London was shaken by a tragic incident on Wednesday afternoon, which was later classified as a terrorist attack. The attacker, who was killed during the incident, drove his car over the sidewalk crossing the Westminster bridge near the British Parliament, hitting everyone in his way. He then crashed his car into the railings outside the Parliament building and then ran to the Parliament, where he was confronted by the Police. He stabbed and killed an unarmed police officer before he was shot dead by armed officers.

According to international media, the Islamic State claimed that the attacker was a “soldier” of the terror group. British Prime Minister Theresa May said that he was a British citizen investigated by MI5 for violent extremism.
