Romanian President promulgates law on food waste

17 November 2016

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis promulgated the law on food waste, which provides that companies need to donate or sell at lower prices the food products that are close to expire.

The bill imposed sanctions of up to RON 10,000 (EUR 2,200) for the companies that will not respect the provisions.

The law was adopted by the Parliament on October 18. It had been initially rejected by the Senate but was later adopted by the Chamber of Deputies.

Companies in the food retail sector need to take measures to prevent food waste, starting from the production, processing, depositing, distribution, and the sale of products. They also need to transfer the food products, either by donating them or selling them at reduced prices.
