Only half of Romanians still have confidence in President Klaus Iohannis

President Klaus Iohannis is still the most trusted public personality in Romania, but his confidence rate dropped from almost 60%, in November 2015, to 51.2%, in March this year, according to a recent INSCOP survey. In May 2015, about 65% of Romanians said they trusted Iohannis.

Meanwhile, although fifth in the ranking, former Prime Minister Victor Ponta has gained some more trust in the last five months: 23.3% of respondents said they have confidence and great confidence in Ponta in March, up from 20.2% in November 2015. Victor Ponta resigned in November last year after massive street protests triggered by the tragedy at Colectiv club.

Romania’s National Bank – BNR Governor Mugur Isarescu comes second in the trust ranking, with a share of 36.1% (down from 40.4% in November 2015). Meanwhile, 30.4% of Romanians have confidence and great confidence in Prime Minister Dacian Ciolos, the figure also being lower than the one registered in November 2015, of 32.6%.

Romania’s ambassador to the US George Maior comes forth in the ranking with a share of 27.3% (down from 29.8% in November), followed by former Prime Minister Victor Ponta with 23.3%.

The top ten continues with former Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu – 22%, Romanian politician Gabriela Firea - the social democrat candidate for mayor of Bucharest (included for the first time in this survey) – 21.1%, Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE) director Mihai Razvan Ungureanu – 20.1%, Minister of Regional Development and Public Administration Vasile Dancu – 17.1%, and co-president of the National Liberal Party PNL Alina Gorghiu – 16.7%.

Former President Traian Basescu ranks eleventh in the top, with a share of 15.4%, down from 16.3% in November 2015.

The list continues with former Minister of Justice Catalin Predoiu, former president of the Senate Mircea Geoana, politician Monica Macovei, former Minister of Transport Ludovic Orban, the president of the Social Democratic Party PSD Liviu Dragnea, PNL co-president Vasile Blaga, and former President Ion Iliescu.

The INSCOP survey was conducted between March 21 and March 28 on a sample of more than 1,000 people, at the request of Adevarul newspaper.
