Romanian President Klaus Iohannis has passed a condolence message to his Israeli counterpart Reuven Rivlin after the death of former Israeli president Shimon Peres. Iohannis will also join other country leaders who will attend Shimon Peres’ funeral on Friday, September 30.

Shimon Peres, a former President of Israel between 2007 and 2014, died on Wednesday, September 28, at the age of 93. He had a political career of over 65 years and was one of Israel’s founding founders and most appreciated leaders abroad. He won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 together with former Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat for the peace talks that he participated in as Israeli Foreign Minister, which resulted in an agreement between Israel and Palestine.

“Shimon Peres will remain in our memory and that of humanity as one of the personalities without comparisons, a truly visionary leader,” Iohannis said.

He also mentioned that Peres was a friend of Romania and the first Israeli President who visited the country, in 2010.

Many state officials have announced their participation at the funeral, which will take place on Friday, on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem. U.S. President Barack Obama, Secretary of State John Kerry, presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and her husband, former U.S. President Bill Clinton, are among those due to pay their last respects to the veteran statesman. Pope Francis, Prince Charles, and top European leaders are also expected.

Besides President Klaus Iohannis, Romanian Senate President and former Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, also said he would go to the funeral.
