Romanian postmen return to work after getting small salary increase

01 November 2016

The postmen’s union reached an agreement with the Romanian Post’s management on the salary increases and will end the general strike.

Some 15,000 postal workers from all over Romania went on an unannounced protest on Thursday, October 27, paralyzing the company’s activity.

The Post’s management came up with two proposals for increasing the salaries, namely to offer wage growths ranging between RON 60 (EUR 13) and RON 200 (EUR 44.4), or between RON 60 and RON 140 (EUR 31).

In the end, the postal workers settled for a RON 80 (EUR 18) gross salary increase plus a higher value of the meal vouchers (RON 11.5 per day compared to RON 9 at the moment). The increases will become effective starting January 1, 2017.

The state-owned Romanian Post is the country’s biggest postal services company. It has a wide network of offices and some 25,000 employees, which make it the biggest employer in Romania.
