Romanian MP: It is harder to be a politician than a soldier in Afghanistan

26 September 2016

Romanian MP Daniel Barbu, from former Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu’s Alliance of the Liberals and Democrats (ALDE) party, said on Friday that being a politician in Romania is harder than working dangerous jobs such as mining, and even riskier than being on a mission as a soldier in Afghanistan.

Many local politicians have been investigated and even convicted to jail for corruption in recent years. Former PM Tariceanu, who was also sent to court for lying under oath in a corruption case, thinks that the anticorruption prosecutors are involved in political games.

“The public mission has become a theater of operations where local or national representatives risk their liberty and health, every day,” Tariceanu’s colleague Daniel Barbu said.

He spoke during a party meeting. Barbu told his colleagues that they have chosen a difficult job, the most difficult of all.

As a reaction to his statements, Marius Apostol, the president of the Association of Veteran Soldiers and Militaries with Disabilities, invited Daniel Barbu to take part in an “all inclusive” trip in the theatre of operations, reports local News.ro. Apostol was seriously injured in Afghanistan.
