Romanian MP: Doubling of public wages was communication error

07 March 2017

Romanian MP Adrian Solomon, president of the Chamber of Deputies’ Labor Committee, said yesterday in the Parliament that most salaries in the public sector would increase on average by 46% in the next four years, and that the idea that salaries would double was most probable a communication error.

“I recommend you to read the governing program,” the MP said, reports local News.ro. “It states that the growth will be 46% on average over four years.”

He added that people with salaries of up to RON 1,000 might have their salaries doubled, but this will not be possible for people with wages above RON 2,000 or RON 3,000.

On Saturday, labor minister Olguta Vasilescu said at local news channel Romania TV that salaries in the public sector of up to RON 4,000 would double whereas those between RON 4,000 and RON 7,000 would increase by 45%, according to the new pay wage roll that the Government is now preparing. She said that people both in the private sector and the others should be patient, because the wage increase will be “a sustainable thing”.
