Romanian education minister: Students should do their homework at school

19 September 2016

Education minister Mircea Dumitru believes that the students should do their homework at school so they would be able to dedicate their time to other activities once they get home.

The students in Romania are spending an “unacceptably long time” to get ready for classes, the minister also said, adding that the idea that a child should spend an entire day preparing for school imposes an “unreasonably work rate and amount of work”.

“They spend a lot of time getting ready for classes, very much, unacceptably long time. They keep dealing with school matters even after the school program ends because they have to do this homework they receive at school, which should normally be done at school, not at home,” the minister said at local TV station Digi24.

According to Dumitru, the idea that a child’s entire day should be connected to school in one way or another is not normal.

More than three million children began the 2016-2017 school year in Romania on Monday, September 12. However, a total of 4,221 school buildings across the country operate without fire safety permits from the Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (ISU) and sanitary authorizations from public health departments.
