Romanian investor & inventor charged with influence peddling

Romania’s anticorruption prosecutors have started an investigation on Romanian investor Mircea Tudor, the owner of the research & development company MB Telecom. He is charged with influence peddling and tax evasion.

Tudor has been accused of giving EUR 1.5 million to a lawyer in Teleorman to help him win an auction organized by the National Customs Authority. According to DNA, Tudor needs to pay a bail of EUR 220,000 by June 30.

The lawyer called Liviu Ardeias is also charged with influence peddling in the same case. According to prosecutors, Ardeias received EUR 1.5 million in two installments in exchange for the promise that he would talk to state officials to help Tudor grab contracts with the National Customs Authority.

In 2013, MB Telecom won the grand prize at the Geneva Salon of Inventions. The company’s Roboscan 2M Aeria won the prize. It is a device that allows airplane wings to be scanned quickly and safely for contraband.

Mircea Tudor won the 2014 EY Entrepreneur of the Year in Romania.
