Romanian Government adopts ordinance on public sector wages

09 June 2016

Romania’s Government adopted yesterday the emergency ordinance that increases the salaries of the public sector employees, said the Labor Minister Dragos Pislaru.

About 650,000 people will benefit from this law, and the budget impact amounts to EUR 193 million for this year and EUR 577 million in 2017.

The emergency ordinance tries to remove the inequalities in the public sector wage system. A part of the law’s provisions will enter into force starting August 1, 2016, whereas the whole salary grid will be applied in December 2017.

Over 1.2 million people are paid from public funds. Some 24% of them work in education, 21% in defense and public order, 17% in local administration, and 13% in the healthcare sector.
