Romanian gets EUR 1 mln compensation from state owned highways company after losing her arm in car accident

11 June 2014

A young Romanian woman, who lost her arm after a car accident in 2006 managed to get EUR 1 million compensation from the Romanian Company for Highways and National Roads (CNADNR) after an eight-year legal battle.

Romania’s Supreme Court ruled in her favor on Wednesday, June 11, and the decision is final and enforceable on the stat company, according to Mediafax newswire.

Georgiana Elena Ghegeliu lost her right arm after an accident in 2006, on her way to Brasov. Her boyfriend was driving the car. They crashed into the side railing of the road after the driver steered to avoid another car. A part of the railing then punctured the side of the car and stabbed her arm which was later amputated at the hospital. Later, investigators established that the road administrator was responsible for this accident for not repairing the traffic safety elements of the road.

In April 2013, the Bucharest Court ruled in her favor and compelled the state company which administers the national roads and highways to pay her EUR 1 million moral damages. However, the Bucharest Appeal Court then reduced the sum to EUR 200,000 saying that her disability, although permanent, doesn’t limit her ability to walk by herself.

The final decision was taken by the Supreme Court, which reinforced the initial decision of the Bucharest Court and said she should be compensated with EUR 1 million.
