Romanian doctors’ wages will go up to EUR 3,600 next year, labor minister says

27 March 2017

Good news for the Romanian doctors. Labor minister Lia Olguta Vasilescu announced on Sunday evening that a doctor working in intensive care units would get to earn up to EUR 3,600 per month next year.

Talking about the unitary pay law, Vasilescu said that the Ministry is working with specialists who have been in this field even since before 1989.

“Many say that the law promoted during Ceausescu’s regime was actually the best because you knew where you would start from and where you would be at the end of your career. We’re trying to apply the good principles of all the other salary laws,” the minister said at local TV station Antena 3, reports local Mediafax.

The President is to have the highest salary in the public sector, of RON 18,000 (some EUR 4,000), she also said.

According to Lia Olguta Vasilescu, the wage increases in the public sector will be done gradually until 2020.

This is not the first time the labor minister announces important salary increases, although some say that the country’s economy can’t support such measures. At the beginning of March, Vasilescu said that the wages in the public sector that are below RON 4,000 would double. However, a few days later she explained that the increase would be made according to the Governing program, over the next four years.
