Romanian director gets two nominations at this year’s European Film Awards

Bacalaureat/Graduation brought Romanian director Cristian Mungiu two nominations at the 2016 European Film Awards.

The Romanian filmmaker is one of the nominees of the European Director 2016 category, alongside German Maren Ade for Toni Erdmann (the film that opened local film festival Les Films de Cannes a Bucarest), Spanish Pedro Almodovar for Julieta, English Ken Loach for I, Daniel Blake, and Dutch Paul Verhoeven for Elle.

Moreover, Romanian Cristian Mungiu and German Maren Ade were also nominated in the European Screenwriter 2016 category, together with Irish-Canadian Emma Donoghue, Scottish Paul Laverty, and Polish Tomasz Wasilewski.

The five films that compete for the European Film 2016 award are Elle, Toni Erdmann, Julieta, Room, and I, Daniel Blake. Find all nominations here.

More than 3,000 members of the European Film Academy will vote the winners. The awards ceremony is to take place Wroclaw, the European Capital of Culture 2016, on December 10.

Graduation is the latest film of Romanian director Cristian Mungiu, and one of his most appreciated movies ever. Besides these recent nominations, the film also brought Mungiu the Best Director award at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, and won top prizes at the Chicago Film Festival, and the Hamburg Critic Award at the film festival organized in the German city in October.
