Romanian Cultural Institute ICR has new management

Romania's Senate appointed designer Liliana Ţuroiu to lead the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR), alongside vice presidents Mirel Taloş and Krizbai Bela Dan.

Ţuroiu was the proposal of the Social Democrat Party (PSD), while Taloş was supported by the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats (ALDE), and Bela Dan by the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR).

The new ICR president was elected with 71 votes in favor, while 33 senators voted against the appointment. Taloş received 73 votes in favor, and 38 against, and Bela Dan 70 votes in favor ad 41 against.

Fashion designer Liliana Ţuroiu is a lecturer at the Fine Arts University in Bucharest, and a president and founder of Altum Studio Design Foundation. Between 2002 and 2018, she worked as an adviser for the president of the Romexpo exhibition center in Bucharest. She also initiated projects such as The Design Gallery, meant to “generate new opportunities in the artistic field.” She was briefly an adviser of the president of the National Tourism Authority (ANT).

Krizbai Bela Dan previously worked as a deputy director of ICR Tel Aviv, and also worked with the Culture Ministry and the Foreign Affairs Ministry.

Mirel Taloş is a former deputy and state councilor on domestic policy of former prime minister Călin Popescu-Tăriceanu.

The management of ICR is made up of a president, who holds a minister rank, two vice-presidents, who have a state secretary rank, all appointed and revoked by the Senate, at the proposal of its Permanent Bureau.

For 2017, the ICR has a budget of RON 34.8 million (approximately EUR 7.8 million), up 0.09% compared to 2016, Agerpres reported. For 2018 it has an estimated budget of RON 36.7 million (EUR 8 million) and for 2019 of RON 36.9 million (EUR 8.2 million).
