Romanian city breaks world record for longest chain of bottle caps

04 July 2016

Arad, a city in western Romania, has recently broken the world record for the longest chain of bottle caps.

The Romanians managed to form a chain of 197,319 bottle caps during an event organized on the city’s Gloria stadium on Saturday, July 2. Some 150 volunteers took part in the event.

A Belgian city used to be the record holder, with a chain that consisted of 87,575 caps in April 2014. However, besides having a higher number of bottle caps, the chain made by the Romanians measured almost 2.3 km, five times longer than the one created in Belgium two years ago, of 442 meters.

It took children from 17 schools about two months to collect the nearly 200,000 bottle caps that formed the chain in Arad, reports local Mediafax. They collected the caps during the Be eco! project, which aims to make Arad citizens aware of the selective waste collection. The project was carried out by Arad Local Police, the County Volunteer Center, and the Municipal Cultural Center.

The Guinness World Records is to validate the record based on evidence images. In the end, the chain of bottle caps will be turned into eco-art.

This is not the first time when the Local Police in Arad gets involved in such events. Last year, the Police asked Arad residents to help them collect a ton of coins. The money was then used to buy furniture for a pediatrics department within the Arad County Emergency Hospital.
