Romanian bookmakers pass RON 1.5 bln turnover mark

The turnover of the Romanian bookmakers exceeded RON 1.5 billion (EUR 333 million) last year.

The market increased over four times in the last seven years, from RON 354 million in 2010, according to an analysis made by the consultancy KeysFin. This year, the market could reach a cumulative turnover similar to 2016.

The sports betting market recorded a peak in 2014, according to experts.

Romania had some 67 betting companies registered at the Trade Register in 2010. In 2014, the number grew to 126 firms. In 2015, the market began to mature, and from developing very fast in the previous years, companies have turned to optimize earnings.

Although businesses have slowed compared to the previous year, the profitability increased to a record level of RON 173.1 million (EUR 38.4 million) in 2015, up by a third compared to the previous year. Max Bet was the biggest player on this market in 2015, with a turnover of RON 326 million (EUR 73 million).
