Romanian authorities will control electricity and gas networks after 12 years

26 August 2016

Romania’s National Regulatory Authority for Energy (ANRE) will check the technical condition of the electricity and gas distribution networks. It will be the first such inspection since these networks were given in concession to private companies, 12 years ago.

“Many of these networks are oversized compared to the current consumption needs,” said Calota, ANRE vice-president, reports local News.ro.

ANRE has hired a consultancy firm for this action.

Most of the gas and electricity distribution grids were concessioned in 2004 for 49 years. In the electricity sector, the market was split among eight regional distributions. Italian group Enel took three centers, Eletrica kept three, the Czech group CEZ took over the distribution in Oltenia, and E.ON in Moldova.

In the natural gas sector, the distribution firms were sold to Engie Romania, the former GDF Suez Romania, and E.ON.
