Romanian authorities appoint 500 school directors who failed official exams

23 January 2017

Romania’s education system is going through a new turmoil that could affect the quality of education in the country, writes the Romanian media.

The Education Ministry has appointed 502 school directors and deputy directors who hadn’t passed the exam for the office or hadn’t even taken part in it. Almost half of the cases (195) were recorded in Bucharest, according to a ministry document obtained by News.ro.

In most of the cases, the Education Ministry has said it wasn’t able to find other solutions and that not enough people were available to take over the offices.

Education minister Pavel Nastase said on January 9 that over 2,300 director offices and over 1,100 deputy director offices were vacant following the exam, and they would be temporarily occupied until a new exam is organized on August 14 this year. Some 2,000 of the 2,300 offices were temporarily occupied whereas 358 remained vacant.

The authorities appointed some 800 people in temporary deputy director positions, whereas about 300 offices remained vacant.
