Romanian anticorruption prosecutors look into former insurance authority

26 April 2016

Romania’s National Anticorruption Directorate (DNA) has been asking the Senate for documents related to the appointment of several members of the former Insurance Supervisory Commission (CSA). The Senate approved the DNA request yesterday.

The Anticorruption Directorate wants to check the documents based on which Angela Toncescu was appointed CSA president in 2006.

The Insurance Supervisory Commission (CSA) became part of the Financial Supervisory Authority (ASF) in 2012.

Angela Toncescu was head of CSA between 2006 and 2011. Toncescu was then appointed board president of local insurer Carpatica Asigurari.

DNA has started an investigation on Carpatica Asig’s shareholders and management earlier this year, who were accused of having set up an organized crime group that aimed to hide the company’s difficult situation. The company has been under financial recovery in the last two years.
