Two paintings by Romanian Adrian Ghenie sell for EUR 3 mln at Sotheby’s auction

Famous Romanian painter Adrian Ghenie continues to be one of the world’s best-selling young artists. Two painting by Ghenie sold for GBP 2.53 million (over EUR 3 million) at a Sotheby’s auction in London on Tuesday, June 28.

Both paintings sold for more than three times their top estimated values. The first painting, called The Hunted, sold for GBP 1.865 million (EUR 2.25 million). The other one, Self-portrait as a Monkey, was bought for GBP 665,000 (EUR 805,000).

Adrian Ghenie - The HuntedIn May this year, another one of Ghenie’s paintings, called Self-portrait as Vincent Van Gogh sold at a Sotheby’s auction in New York for USD 2.59 million (EUR 2.33 million), almost nine times its estimated value.

The Romanian painter set a record in February this year, when his Van Gogh-inspired painting The Sunflowers in 1937 sold for GBP 3.12 million (the equivalent of over EUR 4 million at that time).

Adrian Ghenie was born in Romania’s Baia Mare, in 1977, and graduated from the Art and Design University in Cluj-Napoca.
