Romanian Academy wants state to oblige students to work in country

23 February 2017

The Romanian Academy has come up with a solution for the exodus of university graduates: they should be obligated to work in the country after graduation for a period at least equal to that of the university studies paid by the state, reports local Mediafax.

“To reduce the loss of human capital with higher education by leaving the country, we believe that it is necessary that any graduate of higher education, who received a subsidy from the budget, to be forced to work in the country for a period equal to the duration of the studies subsidized or to reimburse the costs of training,” according to the “Development strategy of Romania in the next 20 years”, published by the Romanian Academy.

The National Association of Student Organizations in Romania (ANOSR) qualified the proposal of the Romanian Academy to oblige graduates to work in the country after graduation as a totalitarian one and infringing on student mobility in Europe.

“These are totalitarian practices. We do not agree with this perspective, it seems a retrograde attitude. Graduates from Romania must have the freedom to find work anywhere in the European area after graduation,” said Vlad Chereches, ANOSR president.
