Romania’s worst taxpayers: “Small” debtors have EUR 17.3 overdue tax liabilities

12 May 2016

Romania’s tax agency ANAF published another list of bad debtors, which includes small taxpayers and public institutions that had overdue fiscal liabilities of over RON 10,000 (EUR 2,200) on March 31, 2016.

The list includes almost 145,000 small taxpayers and public institutions with total overdue fiscal debt worth RON 77 billion (EUR 17.3 billion).

Only less than a fifth of this sum, some EUR 3.3 billion, can be recovered, according to ANAF. The remaining EUR 14 billion will likely never be recovered, as the taxpayers who have to pay this amount are either in insolvency or under special administration.

Moreover, only 44% of the EUR 3.3 billion recoverable arrears, or up to EUR 1.5 billion, are certain to be recovered while the remaining amount is uncertain.

The tax agency also published a list of big and medium companies with overdue tax debt at the beginning of May. The list included 186 big taxpayers and 2,486 medium ones with total overdue fiscal liabilities of some EUR 1.43 billion at the end of March.

The much bigger sum in the case of small tax payers is due to the fact that big and medium companies that are insolvency have been reclassified as small taxpayers, according to a note by ANAF.

The lists with bad taxpayers are available here.
